Most vendors of network equipment offer ongoing software support and hardware maintenance coverage. These are usually based on a percentage of the list price of the equipment purchase and on the level of support and response times desired.
As and example, the low end of the spectrum is usually 5 days x 8 hours – Next Business Day Response and ranges form 10%-15% of the list price. Assuming you purchased the equipment a 20% discount this means that you will spend approximately 12-18% per year for this basic level of support. Thus over a 5 year period you will have spent an additional 60%-90% of the original cost of the equipment.
If you specify more responsive coverage with extended hours, i.e. 7x24 with 4 or 8 hrs response times you could spend as much as 30% per year for support or 150% of the original cost of the equipment over 5 years !!
